| Gallery: | The Writers' Festival is hosted by the literary journal Windhover at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas. Traditionally, about 75 writers gather at this annual conference. Three keynote speakers provide the evening activities, usually a prominent poet (such as past Texas Poet Laureates Cleatus Rattan, Walt McDonald or current Texas Poet Laureate Larry Thomas) provides one of the main events. The annual George Nixon Memorial Lecture typically features artists or writers who examine the connections between faith and poetry. Each year the festival attempts to have the keynote speakers also lead master classes and workshops. This arrangement benefits writers of all levels because they not only hear and see the expertise on display in the main event but also interact with the experts in the workshops. Space in the master classes is limited, but the registration fee ($100) covers all events, classes, workshops, and other activities. Our goal is to create a space where writers of all levels can find encouragement and learn to be better writers. We worry less about the publishing end of the industry and more about the writing itself. This year, the Writers' Festival is scheduled to begin at noon on January 2, 2008, and to conclude at noon on January 5, 2008. The festival usually begins at noon on Wednesday and concludes at noon on Saturday, usually the first or second weekend in January (varying due to the university calander). |
